Ravin' Films is headed by filmmaker and Primetime
Emmy-nominated film editor Bob Sarles, whose work as a producer
and director has been seen on PBS, Showtime, HBO, VH1, MTV and
TechTV. Ravin' Films has also created promotional films for clients
including Industrial Light & Magic and Columbia Records.
When we first met Bob, he had just completed
an VH1 episode of "Behind The Music" on Jefferson Airplane.
Bobs love of the the Dead, Airplane, and all things psychedelic
have always been a driving force in his work, and now he is clearly
reaping the benfits of his dual love for film and music.
Most recently Bob has established himself as
a specialist in editing historically significant found footage
of classic musical performances for museum installations. The
first such project was a 20-minute independent film entitled,
"Feed Your Head", which was an overview of sixties psychedelic
rock which was made for Paul Allens Experience Music Project
in Seattle. Other films created by Bob Sarles and Ravin' Films
are on permanent display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in
Cleveland, Ohio.
More recently, Ravin' Films was the principal
production company chosen to create the exhibit films for the
new STAX Museum of American Soul Music. Bob Sarles has directed
eight films for this project including portraits of Otis Redding,
Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & The MGs, and a documentary about
the roots of American soul music and the history of STAX records
entitled 'SOULSVILLE.' The local screenings of these short films
in San Francisco was somewhat of a sensation.
